Read through before making conclusions
You probably just found out, or you knew for a while, but the fact of the matter is, I am no longer developing, and will be removing the GalacticBots minigame, or whatever you want to call it. There are multiple reasons for this, and hopefully I can explain it to you.
The first issue is that I have to get the bot ready for sharding, to put it simple and quick, the current bot is run by a single process, as soon as it reaches 2,500 servers (Discord requires this), I have to split it up into multiple processes. Why is this an issue you may ask? Well the current way of saving the games data is in a massive JSON file (I know, its horrible), and multiple processes trying to access the same file causes issues.
The second issue is that the game takes a lot of resources that the bot itself should be using. I don't want the game to start to slow the bots response time and functionality down. Which means I have to remove the game at some point (Most likely when the bot reaches 2,500 servers).
The third thing, which isn't an issue, is I am making a standalone version. Yes, you will be able to play the game without using Discord, though i plan to have an integration. (I'll talk about that more on this post). This means the game itself will not be processed on the bot itself, rather it will have its own process. This will be beneficial in many ways, first off because the entire game is being rewritten from the ground up, it will be its own server that we can expand upon, and not to mention the fact I will be able to run multiple servers/universes of the game.
Multiple servers of the game is going to be beneficial in so many ways, to start it will mean we can change economies per server, and make certain ones more peaceful, and other much harder, smaller maps, larger maps,
Will I have to start over? / will my data be reset?
Yes, all data from the bots version will be erased, this is for a good reason, first the format of saving will change, and secondly for balancing. However, players who played the bots version will get a bit of a start
Will the game be monetized?
Short answer, is yes. Though I have no intention of paying for items, or anything that affects gameplay itself. I will be selling hosting of servers, like custom servers that players will be able to rent for their own community to play.
What will happen to GalacticBot?
The bot itself still has many other features servers rely on, such as chat logging, moderation tools, filters, etc. This is the reason the bot itself will not be going away, just the game part of it. However, I do plan for plugins on the standalone (For the server only) that offer other ways to play the game, so my plan is to have a web-version first, a discord plugin next, then a actual game client 3rd, in unity or something maybe. The way discord plugin will work however, is you'll have to chose which server to play on.
When will the standalone be available?
Don't expect it anytime soon, maybe the alpha web version will be available by the start of summer (hopefully), but the development of it just started as of like December of 2016, and as the only developer, it may take some time.
I am removing the bots version to remake it as its own game.
